Our Main Priorities Should Be Where We Focus Our Efforts

What are our main priorities?

What should be significant for us in life?

What decisions need we make today?

Some can wait until tomorrow. Some can wait until next week. Some need never be made.

But some need to be made today.

Yet there is no one sitting there telling us what to do. We have to work all this out for ourselves.

Ever since our teenage years, when we had our parents and teachers advising us, now we are on our own.

We have to fall back on our own resources. And how can we cope with these new responsibilities?

Looking after ourselves takes more than money, time and effort. We also need

  • the right focus - what is important and what is not
  • to ensure our efforts are placed in the right areas - and not frittered away. This may seem fine as we are young and have limitless energy and time. But later in life we need to learn that wasted energy is not replaced. And how many times can we go to the well to drink?
  • discipline to ensure our hard work is best utilized
  • control so that we realize that all is not lost if we fail to achieve everything on day one
  • good self esteem lest we fall prey to outside pressures and stresses which can easily drag us down
  • healthy self respect so that we accept ourselves for who and what we are
  • to realize that though we can accomplish a lot, we cannot reasonably do everything
  • develop a value system that we can be proud of and which will help support us through life's smooth passages, as well as life's challenging episodes
  • know that life is on our side - but this may take years and years to understand

and much more besides. And we need to gel all these aspects together into a coherent whole.

And make it ours.

But this will not be available to us when we first start. We may have to work on this a long time before things start to make much sense. Before things seem to start gelling for us.

We need to be able to relax and feel comfortable in our own skin and in the life we have.

If we do not we need to work at it. For example

  • To be able to see what our prime concerns should be
  • To understand how to rank the tasks in order of precedence
  • To see what is of greater importance than others
  • To know at any particular moment where we should be focusing our attention

If it does not come to pass perhaps we need reflect and assess what needs to be done.

Our main priorities.

Perhaps change is ahead for us. Some tough choices. Some tough decisions.

But we will have the excitement of the chase - the chase for a new you.
